Charity Overseer

From about 1600 support for the poor was the duty of the Parish and was organised by two elected Overseers of the Poor. The role of Overseer was not abolished until 1927. There was no Old Age Pension until 1909 and National Insurance for the sick and unemployed started in 1911.
